The Red Wolf hovered on the brink of extinction due to human persecution and loss of habitat. In 1970 very few true Red Wolves were left and without assistance they would have become extinct. In the late 70s, a breeding program took 14 genetically pure red wolves from the wild and bred them back. Today their numbers rise, but only slightly each year. They are still considered to be critically endangered and in need of assistance.
