This wild horse is found in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia. It is the only true wild horse since it is the only surviving horse species that has never been domesticated. It is a small, stocky pony-like horse. In the early 1900s, hunting pressure, competition for grazing land and water, and interbreeding with domestic Mongol ponies contributed to its increasing scarcity. The most recent reliable sighting of this horse in the wild occurred in 1968. Currently they can only be found in zoos but it is hoped that captive breeding stock can be used in the future to re-establish the species in the wild
