African elephants, which are the largest mammals on land, are now in the list of endangered species. Loss of habitat and poaching are said to be the reasons for the dwindling number of these animals in the wild. The population of these gigantic animals have reduced drastically from a whopping 1.3 million in the 1970s to somewhere between 470,000 and 690,000 in 2007.
