The Black Footed Ferret is listed as endangered by the IUCN because of their small and restricted populations. The species was declared extinct in 1979 until 1981 when a dog brought a dead black-footed ferret home in WY. That last few dozen ferrets lasted there until they were considered extinct in the wild in 1987. A captive breeding program launched by US Fish and Wildlife resulted in its reintroduction into eight western states and Mexico from 1991 to 2008.
