The Maui’s dolphin is found off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Hector’s and Maui’s are New Zealand’s only endemic cetaceans.
The indications are that this dolphin population has declined to fewer than 55 individuals and its long-term survival is unlikely unless protection is provided. This New Zealand dolphin is one of the most endangered cetaceans in the world today.
